The Frenzy for Air Purifiers

Air purifiers are a kind of frenzy now with everyone either having one or planning to buy one. There are different kinds of air purifiers available for the consumer - the ionic air purifier, the HEPA ones and also the UV air purifiers. The levels of air pollution are pretty alarming to say the least. The Journal of the American Medical Association has observed that about half the people in the country breathe in air which are polluted beyond the accepted levels. There is a definite threat of lung diseases as a consequence of this. There are about 50 million Americans who have some sort of allergic problem and there are over 20 million Americans who are troubled by asthma.

And these numbers don't show any signs of decreasing. In fact the opposite is true. A major cause of air pollution is the Sick Building Syndrome which is a result of the different materials used in the construction of a new building and the pollution they create. These substances include glue, insulating materials, cardboard, and fiberglass. Then there are the chemical substances which are being released by the electronic gadgets, carpets, furniture, upholstery, etc.

This has led the EPA to conclude that the air inside buildings may be actually many times impure than the air outside. Such revelations have led many to buy the air purifiers as they don't want to take any chances with the health of themselves or their families. The purifiers are built to purify the air of the particulates and the harmful toxins that remain suspended in the air. There have been different kinds of air purifiers that have been launched over the years. While some work on the principle of ionizing the particulates and thereby capturing them, some are based on the filtration process where the air is filtered through tiny pores but the particulates are trapped. There are also the UV air purifiers which are built specifically to tackle the problem of bacteria and viruses.

A recent introduction to the range of air purifiers is the ozone air purifier which releases ozone into the air to purify it. While the free radical of the ozone combines with an organic substance in the air, the rest is released as oxygen. This increase in demand for air purifiers has led to a tremendous boom in the industry which is seeing a phenomenal growth and the annual sales has already crossed the $100 million mark.
